酒精可以驱动汽车。以糖类的水溶液为基质的电池也有可能驱动车辆。这些都是可以从可再生的植物中获得的。成本，经济适用性是关键。

Yes, In Houston, someone covert used cooking oil from resturants and use it as fuel for his truck.

It get less mileage but the exhaust smell like french fries.

Can fossil fuel be replaced. THe answer is definitely "YES". THe question is at what price? Higher the oil price, sooner the alternative source.

For those wishing high oil price, don't wish too hard or you may get it. When it happened, you and I will meet at unemployment line.

IN US, some liquids already cost more than gasoline. Take bottle water, it cost twice than gasoline by volume. Take Starbuck cofffee @5 per cup, it is about 10X than gasoline. Mike is about $2.85/gallon which is about the same as gasoline. However, milk is renewable and gas is not.

Well, I will be retired from the oil & gas business when this really happens.

I'm a member of AARP (association of american retired person) for several years but I still want to work. I have fun working especially in figuring out Mother Nature's hidden treasure. It is double joy that my end result can help the economy.

I have two kids in graduate schools and one about to go to college. If economy is bad, my kids and along with the those are in school now and those just started in O&G will have tough time. that is no good. I went thru several boom and burst from the 70s to the 90s. To me, all these cycles were caused by the oil price. The high price introduced a very short boost for O&G people, but the fall brought very long & depressed market for EVERYONE. At the end of the day, EVERYONE lost.

BTW, I think there is a gap between my generation and the next generation, IT has bugging me for a very long time. I would like to figure it out before my recall from the maker. MY generation borned right after the war. We were in the building mode and we wanted to contribute. All my classmates are engineers or medical professionals. My kid's generation are in marketing, accountings and science. In this forum, majority of members are mostly from my kids' generation and will be engineers. I would like to ask a favour, what motivate you to become an engineer?

I hope I don't see an reply saying "the pay is good". But based on questions asked in the past, I'm not holding my breath.

能量密度不够，再多也白搭。

一个太阳能电池板，放在那里，有太阳就能发电。这样不是很好吗？

事实并非如此。我们还需要考虑制作这块太阳能板所消耗的能量，部署这块太阳能所消耗的能量，对这些低压电力部署收集系统所消耗的能量，还有太阳能板的寿命。

统统考虑之后，就不一定合算了。

至少在目前看来，我们还是受益者，虽然我们都不愿意看见经济衰退。
关于从事工程师这个工作，我来从我的认识回答您。
我父亲是工程师，虽然不是海洋工程方面的。从小，我们受的教育来说，工程师是比较受尊敬的职业。
现在我明白，工程师是介于蓝领白领之间的职业，出差，现场施工，甚至需要一些体力。我想，在美国，最优秀的人才不会选择工程师了吧，医生，律师，金融行业都会是更好的选择。
干了这行，我还是很喜欢的，但是，我可能不会让我的孩子干这行。

In the 80 when the oil was $40/bbl, a lot of people jumped into the oil & gas industry. The industry attracted a lot of unqualified people and speculators. When a lot of business went under due to high fuel cost. Worldwide economy went to tailspin and demand for oil went down. The supply of oil exceeded demand for oil and a lot of oil companies either went out of business or brought out by other. One way or other, there were too many o&g labors. Hence massive lay off. Me and many professionals were on the street. It took me over a year to find another job. many were tired looking, they changed to other profession.

In the 90, the same scenario happened again. Again, the oil&gas industry dumped so many GGRe out. many went to internet business and they never came back.

If you pay attention to the people who are in the O&G now, you will notice the GGRe are either have 20-30 years or just started 1-5 years. There is a huge gap. In the next 5-10 years, all the experienced in us will be out of the O&G, will the current new hired fill the gap, a lot of HR believe they can't. I believe that is the main reason why all oil companies try to hire 10-20 years experience GGRe.



For now, the demand for oil is still high due to china and india. But how long they can last. If you check the india IT business that were build from US outsourcing, a lot of help centers closed down. Same for China, the economy was builded on the cheap goods for us customers. Now the demand are down, the chinese economy will cool down too.

The us economy at this time is in recsession, you already see mass layoff started in auto and airline. Others will follow soon. When will indian and chinese economy cool down, no one know but if the oil price stay high, they will too.

Anyway, the picture is not rosy. If the storm hits, the old folk like me will just retire. Can the current O&G new hired survive this storm, does the O&G industry have enough qualified GGRes left to serve the industry after the storm, only time will tell.
