石油工业界中, 对于研究勘探地球物理和岩石物理的人士来说, 大家对泊松比和Vp/Vs都不陌生. 今天就谈谈以Leon Thomsen 为代表的Vp/Vs派, 和以Fred Hilterman 为代表的泊松比派之争. 这两派各有一帮支持者. 首先以各向异性出名的Leon,1990 年在The Leading Edge 上发文, "Poisson was not a Geophysicist (泊松不是地球物理学家)" 向泊松比派挑战, Fred的支持者表示泊松比简单实用. 双方展开拉距战, 继而Leon在1996年继续发文, "Poisson was not a rock physicist, either!(泊松也不是岩石物理学家)", 再点硝烟. 至今为止, 两派还有各自的支持者坚持自己的观点. 孰对孰错, 历史自有评判.

小典故, 两年前, 休斯顿大学的Bob Sheriff退休之即, 以他命名的教授Chair之位邀请名家来应聘, 一时各路英雄豪杰纷纷跃跃欲试, 最后休斯顿大学地学系精心挑选出四大顶极高手来进行应聘演讲, 这四大高手为,

I wrote the original post in 2006. Rob Stewart joined UH in 2007 after Kurt Mafurt left UH.

Last week, I attended GSH-SEG Spring symposium to honor Bob Sheriff. All the faculty I mentioned above showed up and gave talks. During the dinner I sat the same table with Kurt Mafurt and Rob stewart and had a very nice conversation.

One speaker talked about reservoir property and he said at least one audience said "Poisson was not a geophysicist". Everybody in the room was laughing because Leon Thomsen sat there.

Bob Sheriff is almost 90 years old and is one of most respected exploration geophysicists. I have the honor to take the last class he taught in University of Houston.

Happy birthday, Bob, Be healthy.
